Homefront

On the home front of Pennsylvania, citizens worked hard to provide for soldiers over seas. PA steel mills produced 1/3 of the steel used in WW2. The president at the time, Franklin Roosevelt, named the Keystone State as the "Arsenal of America". Bethlehem was a major steel mill in PA that helped give Pittsburg it's steel reputation. In addition, PA produced both anthracite and bituminous coal which would be used in other factories across the country to help the war effort.

The totality of the war effort needed to fight a global conflict affected every Pennsylvanian. The federal government rationed meat, sugar, gasoline, rubber tires, coffee, and other products, and the war effort drastically cut into items most consumers could previously buy. Milk, eggs, and fruit such as apples, cherries and grapes were also massed produced in PA.
